What is Design And What is Art? (Discussion)

Carsten saidWed, 30 Apr 2008 17:37:52 -0000 ( Link )

You could sum this one up pretty quick by saying something like, “Design is objective while art is subjective.”—design is created with a functional purpose, art is an outlet of emotion.

Does this mean that art created with an objective in mind, to be sold for example, is in fact design? Does a professional illustrator create design or art? What do art and design mean to you?

... and probably you feel like sharing your answer with What is Art?? / Was ist Kunst??

For me an artwork is filled with meaning, best with subtile, ambi/multivalent meaning … I guess this is not necessary for an designwork? On the other hand it will also referr to something else, subtile, humorous, playing with meaning as well …

    Who says design isn’t art?

“Art” has many forms – has many meanings – and has many connections with the creator and viewer. Just because an artist created a piece of work for a little bread and water doesn’t mean the fact that it’s art is yanked away from it.

Look at Michelangelo, most of, if not all of it was created for the church, it was his lifeboat, and he was an artistic genius. Because of that is any of his work not consider artwork?

    It’s all about personal taste.

I think you also have to look at motives. There is an intended meaning vs. an ascribed meaning, and also the culturally-sanctioned vs. anti-readings, the latter of which tend to attempt a subversion of the status quo.

A commercial artist may very well be motivated by financial incentives, or s/he may want to subtly contest what is expected of the resulting work.

Now as for the purpose, it may be either for aesthetic pleasure, wholly utilitarian, or a nice combination of both.

For me design is something from my brain, art is from my soul. If design is novel, art is poetry.

I look at art as a general thing… anything can be art- the art of painting, writing, even the art of design. If you do something and pour some passion into it, it’s art.
Designing is planning and creating something… it can be art, but it doesn’t have to be, you can design with your brain alone and not with your spirit. I guess I agree with Hui then.
Anything can be art, but it doesn’t have to be… sort of thing. I don’t even know what I’m trying to say at this point, forget it.
